Update Archive - August 2002
August 31 - Believe it or not, August featured another web catastrophe when the domain name for the site expired with no
notice from the registrar. Actually, a notice was sent to the new web host, who either didn't receive it or didn't know what
needed to be done. Either way, I was completely SOL by the time I tried to log on and got a "parking" page (you may have seen this
as well).
The first step was to contact the web host and see if it was their doing. Next was to contact the company listed on the parking page.
They referred me to the reseller who didn't respond to numerous email messages. With persistence and patience (what a fabulous
combination) the site was restored. But of course, not much got done during that two weeks.
Actually, while waiting for return messages, a few things got done, but they would not have been visible yet anyway. Work is still in
progress on a complete renovation of the ballpark section. New parks, new photos, new
research. Each new page is taking about 10 days to complete -- I got two done in August.
Look for all of this in September.
August 5 - Well, another hosting catastrophe has been endured. Folks trying to reach this site over the last week were
left to eat web dirt as my host company bailed (or rather, "was bought out"). I really have no clue what happened, but in setting
things back up again, I got a sizable discount. I can't imagine too many people noticed...
But just before the blackout, I added a comment script to each and every page. Now, anyone visiting any page can leave a comment
about that page which will appear to all subsequent visitors. My Perl skills have come a long way, baby. By the way, just let me say
that Perl is one helluva cool language. Compact, versatile, flexible, simple, deeply complex. I think it may be the best language
I've ever coded in. And no matter what I do, I find out later how I could have done it in less lines of code. Simply amazing.
Coming very soon is an update to all of the ballpark pages. It comes hot on the heels of my most recent trips: to Boston, Chicago,
Detroit, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Milwaukee. Look for it in phases over the next few weeks.
