Frank Lloyd Wright

These are images from Wright's design for the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo (built 1915, demolished 1968). There is no way to tell where he began with designs like this. He probably started with a single geometric shape then let his imagination take over. But because the result is always perfectly balanced, you can imagine his eye -- and then his pencil -- at each step finding the shape which would provide the best balance for what was already drawn.
