Northwestern League Park
West 24th Street and Portland Avenue South, Minneapolis (1884-1885)
I can't find any photos of this park, though it seems almost inevitable that at least one was
taken. Beyond that, I haven't yet determined where it actually was. Various accounts place it
at:
East 17th Street and Chicago Avenue South
East 17th Street and Portland Avenue South
East 24th Street and Portland Avenue South
One of the reasons for the discrepancy is that the streets in south Minneapolis were renumbered
in the late 19th century. This suggests that 24th Street is more likely. But Chicago and Portland
Avenues are four blocks apart, making it unlikely that they simply formed the boundaries of the
park.
MapQuest adds to the confusion by showing Peavey Field as being located at 24th and Chicago, suggesting
that this might have at one time been the park. The truth is that Peavey Field is one block north,
at what would be the intersection of 22nd Street and Chicago (bounded by Franklin on the north
and Park Avenue on the west -- there is no 23rd Street in this part of Minneapolis).
What can be said is that the Minneapolis Millers played there, although it is unclear to which
league they belonged. It's certain that this was not the same franchise which would later play
at Nicollet Park.
